68 Firewall / Wiper door mount questions?

Are 68 firewall cowels unique? The upper part of the firewall.

On my 68, the passenger side hood latch box has been damaged along the way, so I bought a ussed upper cowel from a 69. After looking into installing it by glueing it over the damaged box / cowel area, I see it is different. It juts out at about the mid point and it also has two holes above where the latch installs to the box. (my 68 is smooth accross the front of the box and only has one hole on the back upper area of the cowel above the latch)

So are the cowels different from 68 to 69 or are they different for AC cars?

    Thanks,

    Steve

There is one thing you can just about always take to the bank. Everything is different on a `68.

I have some '68 cowl pieces. E me with photos of the pieces you need, and I'll send you photos of what I have.

Thanks George, I will do that tomorrow. Basically I need the entire "box" that the bean can for the wiper door (wiper door actuator) mounts to and the rod goes through. The passenger side hood latch bolts to a mount that is attached to this piece also. Mine was damaged at some point in its life and the repair was less than desirable. The best way I see to repair this section is to mount bond a good one over the damaged one.

        Thanks again,

        Steve

You can make a clean cut into the good section of the area of your car and graft on a donnor piece. You should be able to glue some small bonding strips to the underside without any problem. I would use some black epoxy to assemble it. Use a 40 grit and rub the areas that are going to be glued. Using a gloved hand, rub the epoxy into the bonded areas. After it has set up you can bevel the outside seam and fill with original formula and sand smooth. Hit it with a little red oxide primer and some semi-flat black paint and nobody will ever know but you. You probably know all this stuff. Terry

            Thanks Terry,
It appears this cowel design changed soon after the 68 model year. I don't know exactly when, but it seems unique to 68s.

I seem to recall that it is completely different. Though, later parts were something like a service replacement for them. George has a few 68's that he can scrounge off of for stuff like that. He can help you out. I have worked with him in the past. Take care, Terry

                Steve,
I went out to the "bone yard", and I have three nice '68 cowls. Send those photos when you can, and I'll send you photos of what I have.
If you are not able to repair your '68 doors, I have cp. and vert. doors that are in nice condition.
