    327/427 changeover

A question has come up that if a guy or a dealer wanted to changeover from a 327ci. to a 427ci. engine, and the car be reasonably undetectable, what would they have to do. I mean besides all the obvious engine, radiator, tach.stuff etc.

I believe that there's a dealer in OHIO that could answer that question. But I'm not sure .

      Hi Bob:

If I may, I believe you would have to tie down the year a bit or you may receive a large number of opinions that may not be typical year to year. The obvious generalities you mentioned plus the changeover would depend upon options , (placement of alternator, AC compressor involvement), also. Front springs, front and rear anti roll, (sway) bars, exhaust, tachometers and in some cases oil pressure gauges are some that come to mind that should be typical to all examples.

What is basis for the question? If object is how to do the 'deed' in and undetectable manner, NCRS rules barring dealer/owner inspired configuration change will prevent many of us from responding. If object is to detect an altered vehicle, more of us will participate but NOT on the NDB in public as this telegraphs a 'templete' of how to....

Bob --- Well, first you have to REALLY overbore the 327 (heh heh). Seriously, we already have our "cookbook" [like it or not] in the form of the NCRS Tech Manual for the year in question. Read it from cover to cover, note down each reference to features of big vs. small block. Whether to verify originality or to "enhance/modify" to a non-original configuration is an individual's decision. NCRS evaluates on APPEARANCE of originality.

Hey Wayne, around the corner from me, here in Moline, IL, is a speed shop that sells 427 small block engines - ready to rock and roll. You are correct. That's the easy way. - Dave
