    C2 collector car insurance Q

Shopping for insurance for 66 roadster.

Use of car seems restrictive for all carriers, based on my interpretation of website info the following senarios will not be covered under Hegarty, Grundy, AON etc

1.drive to my NJ shore house, park overnight in driveway
2.very infrequent drive to work, park in corporate garage with security presence
3.pleasure drive, parking at rest stop to get lunch and leaving car unattended in parking lot

In reality, how loosely are the use-provisions actually applied? Any carriers known for being mor-or-less strict? Would any claim for an incident under one of these senarios really cause a hassle, or worse, rejection of a claim?

Or is this small stuff and should I just go with a typical name-brand?

Thanks in advance for any guidance

Hagerty would appear to cover your 1-2-3 items, although they will be most sensitive about item 2 and the frequency of the rare commuter use, and will also want to know about the frequency of your trips to the Shore, since, as you know, they require that the insured vehicle be kept in a locked garage when at home and they underwrite the risk accordingly - I would bet they would advise this would be acceptable and covered use if it is truly infrequent, such that, aside from the odd trip in your collecotr car, it will be kept in your locked garage overnight. This based on my read of their policy and my email exchange with their underwriters in advance of becoming a Hagerty insured 3 years ago.

I would advise that you have an email dialoge with Hagerty on the coverage position for these uses, and then save that email excahnge along with your policy information.

      Bob,

Jack has given you good advice. I don't know if you have an umbrella policy or not but if you do you have to give consideration to your umbrella carrier as many require that you maintain the underlying coverage with them. I write insurance for Hagerty, American Collectors, and regular companies that also provide insurance for older cars. I rarely do the liability coverages with other than the clients regular insurer because when it comes to liability you what to know your coverd no matter how your using the car. The specialty companies (Hagerty,Am. Collecctors, etc.) will write physical damage only if you desire but the physical damage is limited to their defined usage.

Just curious as to how this might apply to something like leaving your car on an open, guarded NCRS judging field for a couple of nights while attending a Regional or National Convention?

          Bob,

There is no such thing as "small stuff" when it comes to insurance. I've been doing insurance for 40 years and I can tell you for certain that you MUST cover everything in writing with the Insurer. I would also recommend using an Insurance Broker to place your coverage and make sure you do everything in writing with them. With the advent of E-mail, this is no longer a cumbersome thing to do. Your questions can be easily answered to your entire satisfaction by any professional Broker.....just be sure to get it in writing.

Agreed. I let Hagerty know that I drive our 1970 Cutlass convertible to work a few times a month (it's out there right now in the lot) and they had NO problems with it. As long as they know ahead of time, you should be fine.

Hagerty is an MGA for the carrier they write for / produce business for (CNA), I don't know if they deal with subproducers (ok, my insurance business freinds here know this jargon) - do you know if they do?

Completely agree that, if you have a coverage issue you are not sure about after reading the carrier's description of the policy, engage them in an email (or other written) dialogue, then, if you get an answer you like and end up purchasing a policy from them, their advice on coverage could be valuable later on - but know this - if the policy CLEARLY says something ain't covered, it ain't covered, and likely no amount of extraneous information will fix it for you.

While we are on the subject of insurance, are there any companies that will write a "all vehicles owned" policy. What do collectors do who may own dozens of collector cars? Do they just have individual policies on each or is there a blanket policy available for situations like this?

Make sure you have your cars with State Farm under a "collector" type of policy with Agreed Value coverage.
Do NOT have them insured as a regular car no matter WHAT your agent tells you.

Don't ask how I know this.

well, to be clear, saying Hagerty sells direct is not the same thing as Geico sells direct (perhaps I am not telling you something you don't al;ready know Wayne), for (and this might be a suprise to some) Hagerty ain't no insurance company, they underwrite risks and adjust claims, but your insurer in a Hagerty-produced policy is a member of the CNA group. Thankfully, that issue is only relavant to financial security, you get to deal with Hagerty when they write the coverage and then again when you have a claim, and they know the Classic Car business.
