Engine pad only once more again

I've seen many engine pad stamping post here in which many GOOD options were given as to what they thought of them.

The pic. I post got 13 replies but no mention about broaching, charactered numbers ,mistakes or what might have happened. I thought this was a big deal with many members . I only know my engine came with the Corvette from the factory when NEW. I don't know WHAT happened concerning the engine pad numbers. That is why I posted it , I respect others option , I'm not going to get upset over the answers , I'm not ever NCRS showing the 67, so don't attack ME, but I thought we were trying to learn about what happened , not all things are perfect or easy as we would like concerning our Corvettes. I feel with some members to bring up anything out of the NORM you get criticized. I'm also becoming quite aware personal feeling get quite upset if one uses the wrong word in asking or replied to by some members.
So let me say Sorry. sorry, sorry if I again worded this wrong.

    I would contact Al Grenning

Al has the Master Pad Index and more experience than anyone else in the NCRS as far as judging engine stampings.

No offense to the Great Unwashed out there (including me), but I really doubt that we will be able to give you an opinion comparable to Al's. He'll be able to tell you if any similar stamping has ever been reported before. I can tell you I've never seen anything like it, but so what?

ohn Yglesias in Virginia has a 1962 pad that looks similar to yours. Actually, his is actually worse! But, the car has been in the family since new, so......

Roy, I hope your not mad at me!!! I have seen double stamps in N/C top flight before & it had a letter from Al Grenning verifing the authenticity.
              Regards, Don

Of course NOT! Only one person makes me think twice about his intentions . I can take a joke when it is a joke, and I don't take Corvettes that serous or any other car. To me it's always been a fun HOBBY ! Nothing "more" or less .

Re: Engine pad only once more again

                      Hi Roy:

I'm no pad expert, but I have read several articles about pads and I find the topic interesting. I know that there are documented cases of "factory regrinds" where a pad was stamped incorrectly and the fix was to grind off the first stamping and apply a corrected one. Normally, the new stamp would be made with the standard gang holder that makes all the characters line up, which is clearly not what was used on your pad.

I think I have also read about cases where a pad was factory restamped later in the production process, after the car had passed the regular stamping station. In that case I think it may have been possible that the restamp was done one character at a time, as was obviously done on your pad.

As others have said, Al Grenning probably has the most experience looking at pads and has the largest library of photos, including other "unusual" pads that he has concluded are original. I'm sure that Al would be very interested in seeing this pad and hearing what you have to say about why you are convinced it is original.

I would suggest that you contact him and ask for his opinion on this. In cases where a pad appears to be so completely "incorrect," it would take someone like Al Grenning to persuade the rank and file NCRS members that this is really a factory stamping.

                          My Guess...

It is an OTC replacement engine that someone attempted to "attach" to the car.

                            Re: My Guess...

Lets say that we agree that it was possible and it may have occurred. That a block was restamped at the factory for some reason. Wouldnt it be reasonable that, at a very minimum that the correct style lettering would have been used? All that I have ever seen, and I have seen a few, at least had original style lettering. This block is stamped with hardware store stamps that look nothing like originals. My opinion is, that upon the slim chance it is the original block, it was at least restamped sometime later in life, not at the factory.

What about the possibility that the engine was replaced under warranty and the dealer stamped the VIN number on the block? My father-in-law has an 87 that he bought new that has this very situation.
