    Holes behind gas tank C1

I have 2 4" holes in the body between the trunk wall and the gas tank cover. They are spaced equally apart and you can see clear through. It doesn't look like normal. Is it?

    George...

Under the tank, holes exist in the fiberglass bottom wall. (3) three in a row on centerline and (2)two outboard as the one on the right is for the tank drain.

What year? "C1" isn't terribly specific. Where are the holes in relation to the centerline of the car?

One additional question about the holes. Are they supposed to be uncovered? My 58 has what appears to be a hand trimmed aluminun plate covering the passenger side hole and a manufactured plate on the driver side. The center one was uncovered.

              Roy,

Sorry for the delay in responding...away from home last 2 weeks. The holes which I refer to are beneath the gas tank. The right hand oval located directly beneath gas tank drain hole; the left hand oval symmetrical to the right but not no apparent access reason; and lastly the three ~2.0 inch diameter round holes located on the center line of the body. Metal plates covered the right and left hand ovals both with caulking; no plate in the center; and the left hand plate appears to have been hand cut from scrap. Are any of these holes beneath the tank supposed to be covered?

              Thanks for your assistance.

The two oval holes Right and left side of the tank and others were not covered, under the body some have heat shields above the mufflers 53-56 all had them but later up C1's was miss and hit/ I covered the holes in my 55 with black tar paper to help keep road heat out, but I believe GM's idea was to circulate out side air. Again that was the reason the tank top cover used clay to seal the lid to keep hot exshust heat and gas smell from entering the cab area.

The holes are there to continuously ventilate the fuel tank compartment; if you seal them up, you create a bomb waiting for a spark.
