Assuimg you are talking radials, the 215/70R-15 has the same revs per mile, 775, but the speedo gears were set up for the 760 revs per mile of the old 6.70-15, so I recommend 225/70R-15, which are speced at 760 Also, the 8" rim is a bit wide for a 215/70.

There are three V-rated "police pursuit tires" in size 225/70R-15 102V - GY Eagle RSA, Firestone Firehawk PV41, and General XP2000V4. All are blackwall, but I think General might also offer a whitewall. Check The Tire Rack and mfgs. web sites.

The PV41 is difficult to find on the Bridgestone Firestone web site. Click "specialty tires" and go from there. The PV41 is only available in three sizes to fit current in service police cars and the two 15" sized may not be around much longer

Look at the Spring and Summer 2003 issues of The Corvette Restorer for a detailed discussion of these tires including performance tests conducted by the DOJ.

        Re: F70x15=

the reason i asked is that i was putting the new tires on and the front ones rub on a hard turn like pulling into a parking spot. i have 255/60/15 radial t/a. the diameter of all the ones mentioned above and the 255's are between 26.9-27.1" they rub on the front fender front lower lip. there is a lot more space behind the tire than in front. just had it aligned to spec, body never been off the frame, only one slight fender crunch....any ideas? is it because of the width as opposed to the diameter?
        thanks, dick

When the 255/60 tire was first offered in 1978 the front fender lip was trimmed at the factory for the very reason you mentioned. I used to have pics of this on my former 1979 L-82 but my archives crashed at one point and they were lost.

            do you have F41?

The F41 sits lower than the standard suspension and on my F41 cars, the largest tire I could run was a 235/60 15 (I didn't try a 245/60 15 as they didn't have one at the time, but the 255 definitely rubbed.

              Re: do you have F41?

the car is actually sitting kinda high as i dont have the doors loaded with the PW, dash not in, no carpet, etc. just the seats so i could start it up and get it to the alignment shop. with all the new bushings and rear spring rubber dividers, its pretty stiff. i need to hit some bumps with it to settle it down. the 235/60's are about 1" shorter, so they might be the ticket. im going to drive it a little when i get it back from its final color sanding and buffing. thanks, dick

                Re: F70x15= too small

The biggest you will run in a 60 series is 245. The 255 is going to rub on front. I'm surprised it isn't rubbing on back. I have seen 255/60-15s rub on the brake cable bracket, cutting a groove in the tire that the owners never knew existed if they used the steel Rally wheels. If using the '76 up aluminum, they didn't rub on back.

Comparisons with '73 and newer are not any good, as the body sits higher. In '78 up, the rear body is wider.

The 235/60-15 look just a slight bit small, but 255/60-15 will rub too much. A 245/60-15 is about as good as you can get, but they are hard to find.
