Re: Which Cat Converter Dynatech or Dynomax
The '76 OE converter has a four bolt flat flange at either end, and the inlet and outlet axes are angled, not straight. The '75 converter has a ball flange on the outlet side.
Catco, Eastern Catalytic, Walker (Dynomax) are available bolt-in OE replacement brands - just google for the best price.

Re: Which Cat Converter Dynatech or Dynomax
I'm not Duke, but I'll offer an opinion on the straight pipe instead of the cat. On my '81, it picked up noticeably on throttle response and seat-of-the-pant accelleration when doing this. However, You'll likely have to do the woerk yourself or find someone you know pretty well to get it done. Most reputable exhaust shops, at least in this area (KY and OH) won't touch this kind of work unless they know you well enough to know you're not an EPA snoop. According to the EPA, replacing the catalytic converter with a pipe is against the law and the muffler shop could get a huge fine if caught doing it. In the old days, you could mail order what was called a "test pipe" that bolted right in in place of the cat and we only used to verify that that darned clogged cat was the cause of poor performance, then we immediately replaced the test pipe with a new cat ;-) I haven't seen a test pipe on the market in several years. The government must have cracked down on their sale. One note, most shops I have talked to WILL install a non-cat exhaust for you, as long as it rolls into their lot without a cat, regardless of how it came from the factory, since it was not they who removed the cat...- Top
