C2: '67 L68 tach redline

What should the redline be on a '67 L68 (427/400) motor be? I'm looking at a car that looks to be pretty original, except for an unstamped block. Noland Adams' book says the redline should be 6000 for a L68, but the tach in this car is yellow from 5000-5300, red from 5300-5500, which Noland's book says is for a base car only.

Nolan Adams is correct. Your probably looking at a "wannabe" BB car that started life as a little feller.....

Thanks Steve. I forgot to mention that this is a C60 AC car. Does that make a difference?

AC makes no difference in the red line on a 67 L68. Should be 6000 rpm.

Yep, that's a base engine/L-75 tach. Only the 327/250 and 300 HP engines used this tach with yellow from 5000-5300 and red from 5300-5500, so if a SHP SB or BB has this tach, it's a dead giveaway that it's had an engine swap.

Of course the tach could have broken years ago and the only tach the owner could find to replace it was that one.

Get Help

If your going to make a decision if a car is a big block or small one by the tach, you are in trouble, get help, I mean this in a nice way! there are a LOT of different things to look for, the tach should be the last thing! not the first Phil 8063

Definitely good advice, but the question was asked as an additional data point, not the first. There are several other things, including an unstamped block, that are helping me make this decision.
