    Steering Wheel Column/Horn Problem

    Hello:

Guys; I need your help! My 68 Coupe has developed a odd problem. When I turn
the wheel slightly to the left the horn goes off. What could be causing this problem? I am no master mechanic but am fairly good with little problems. Would
the problem be deep in the steering wheel column or on top. I can certainly
do work on the horn buttom or below it. I would not want to go deep in the column as this becomes a problem for me. Any ideas? Please help.

Larry my 67 horn sounded when & only when I turned slightly right.
I took off steering wheel & checked all wires. All looked good. I happened to notice that a wire on the horn itself was loose. Tightened & never made another unwanted honk. Hope this helps. Don

      Re: Steering Wheel Column/Horn Problem

      Larry,

I also had a simular problem. What I found was that thin vinyl insulating disk that the contact pin travels on when turning the steering wheel had worn thin in some areas so with the right amount of pressure on the steering wheel (turning) it would cause the horn to blow. I couldn't find a replacement part so I used electrical tape to give more insulation and it has not been a problem for 6+ years. When you pull the steering wheel hub this will all make sense. Hold the disk up to a light and you will see where it wears thin.
