    Overheating followup

After reading all of the posts, I started looking a little closer at the carb.
It`s a rebuilt 3367, proper for a 66 SB, I believe. This carb came to me, looking like a brand new carb, totally rebuilt. When I test Harleys for intake leaks, I will spray a little brake clean around the intake manifold. If the engine stalls or stumbles, you have a leak. Not rocket science, but effective every time. Spraying cleaner at the throttle shafts, on my carb, almost kills the engine. I`m assuming that this is a problem. If so, what is the fix?
I paid $800.00 for this carb about 2000 miles ago, had nothing but trouble with it ever since. Thanks, Bill

    Bill-----

Your throttle shaft bores in the throttle body need to be bushed. You may also require machining of the throttle body base (where it interfaces with the manifold). Also, servicing of the metering block may be required where it interfaces with the carb air horn or float bowls. These are common problems with Holley carbs.

Some folks think that you can rebuild a carburetor simply by installing a kit. Very often, it takes WAY more than that.

I'll repeat something I've said MANY times before: NOTHING makes a car run like a NEW carburetor. Nothing. Period. Of course, that's usually not an option for folks wanting an original, "matching numbers" carburetor. But, if you want an engine to run its best, a new carb is what you need.

      Thanks Joe,
Could this problem cause overheating at load or speed? What carb would you recommend? I have a 300 HP automatic. I like the heat operated choke.
      Thanks, Bill

        Bill,

Before you throw more money at that old carb consider what Joe has said because I spent time and money on an original 3810 Holley but never got it to idle consistant. I purchased a new 3810 and I have no more carb problems, period. Save that nice looking old carb for judging and get a new one for driving. It will put a on your face.

          Richard,

Yes, I think you found the problem with overheating under load.

Maybe you should contact the rebuilder or seller. That's a pretty hefty price for that carb. For that amount of money, the throttle bushings should have been at least checked, if not replaced with these machined-in bronze bushings, or the whole throttle body replaced.

The original throttle body had these plastic tape bushings, which wear and leak especially on the primary side with the greater use. The fix is, as Joe suggested, to have these machined-in bronze bushings installed. But once you take it apart, something else is going to pop up.

You can get a whole new throttle plate assembly for around $150 and maybe your rebuilder should have included one with the carb. If you change the throttle plate assembly, you should get the bottom of the body and both metering surfaces planed flat. I did on mine at a local machine shop for about $50.

But these things should have been the rebuilder's responsibility. Did he test it on a car before he sent it to you.

Let us know how you make out, and maybe who he is.
