    '64 Spare Tire

Purchased a new Coker B.F.Goodrich Silvertown Spare tire 6.70x15 {DOT}.
Cannot fit it into the spare tire carrier.
Lowered the tire pressure to 20lbs.May try with 0 lbs,but what good will the spare be if its needed.
Coker stated they reccomend a 6.40x15,but that is not correct.Wish I asked first.
The F78x15 Dayton tire that was in their prior fit in tight with 28 lbs.of pressure.
Who makes the better fit tire?

    Re: '64 Spare Tire

I purchased a set of 775X15 Goodyears for my 67. The spare fits snugly in the carrier...but it does go in. Maybe someone with 670X15 Goodyears can give you some direction......at least measure the diameter and circumference for you

      Re: '64 Spare Measures

An original spare tire, BF Goodrich 6.70 X 15 with 35 lbs of air measures
      d= 27.5 C= 86.75 w= 7.5 (all in inches)
Check your tub measurements also - it may be small??
      Hope this helps

        Re: '64 Spare Measures

I purchased a spare 7.75x15 from Coker for my '66 and found that the diameter is a bit too wide for the tub as I can not get the lid to close fully flush to the tire carrier. I later found out through the Discussion Board that the replacements are not sized 100% correct when compared to an original tire. So, you might be having the same issue with your tire.

Maximum diameters to fit spare tire tubs

This problem has led me to measure every tire/rim combo I have, and have arrived at the following conclusions. Use the circumference measurement, as it is more accurate than estimating the diameter. (I use a length of electric cable (at least 90" long), with a crayon to mark the overlap; carry one when you go shopping for rubber.

C2 tubs can accept up to 88" circumference (on a rim, at suggested pressure). If larger than this, they will jam in the tub and you will have to pry them out. Here's a few examples of those that fit: original Uniroyal whitewall 7.75; 86.75" circ.; original '66 Supersport 7.75 Goldline 86.375"; repro 7.75 Firestone Goldline 85.875". One that DOESN'T fit: (original, no DOT) B.F.Goodrich 7.75 blackwall, 89.125" circumference.

Secondary consideration is the width (ie. Goldlines are wider than whitewalls, Knock-off rims are wider than steel rims ('64-66). But this is accomodated with longer hanger and/or hinge bolts.

            Re: '64 Spare Tire

I had the same problem with my 1963- Coker tires do not have the same tolerences that the major tire guys have or had. I took my tire back and had a new one re-ordered. and before I took it from the tire store I measured the diameter to be sure that it would fit. It did. so I was able to get one that went right in. Its not your carrier, its the tire manufacturer. good luck

              Re: Tub Measurements

When my spare tire is in tub it has about 1/2 inch of space. BF Good 6.70-15 with c=86 3/4"

The tub at bottom is 27 1/4" then expands to 27 1/4" which continues to top. The depth is about 7" with two bumps (about 1" dia) in bottom of tub. Now my tire measures about 7 1/2" so the top of tub will never set against the lip of the tub, however the lip is extended past the 7" depth so you do not see the tire. These measurements are from a Mar 64 car.

              Hope this helps
