I see in the factory assembly manual, that L79 timing specs call for 10 degrees BTDC @900 (vacuum line discnnected), with a notation that it was changed from 650 rpm on 8/4/65. I set mine at 650rpm, the engine runs excellent and I don't plan on messing with it....I was just wondering what was up with that..

Re: '66 L79 timing rpm in assembly manual
The initial timing must be set at an engine speed BELOW where the centrifugal curve starts. Many start at 700, but according to the '66 L-79 specs I have the centrifugal starts at 900 and provides 30 degrees at 5100 Check specs in your CSM or AMA specs and test yourself to determine at what engine speed the timing begins to advance since many were modified over the years and the only way to determine what your centrifugal is doing is to map it yourself.
If there is no detonation, 8-10 degrees initial is okay and that would be 38-40 at 5100, WOT.
