I will be laying out the stripes on my hood by this weekend and thought I was in good shape until re-checking the AIM tonight. I understand all dimensions indicated from centerline except the very tip on the surround. The confusing part is in a circle & says "-50 S.V." drawn to indicate the point of the solid stripe (not the 0.12 pin stripe). I'm just not getting this (could be tired).
Also, as a side question, are there any recommendations on the underhood paint/finish?
S.V. is a side view of the grid shown on sht C5 of the AIM. I found the problem to be "where/what is the zero point from which to measure" Never did solve that question. Appears to me that the zero point of the grid sideview is a point in space. I tried to come off the face of the firewall as "zero" but that didn't work for me. Finally gave up and estimated the tip using the photo on the 67 sales brochure. There are photos of "original stripes" floating around but I couldn't locate one with a dimension or tape measure shown....and even these vary some. I'm a "detail freak" and I noticed that the photo sent into this thread shows that the hood stripes don't line up with the front stripes on the valence area. How can a stripe be laid out across the hood opening and not line up? I've seen many stripes that don't line up because someone attempted the lay them out separately rather than lay out the tape in one shot and then cut it at the seam... my $.02
The drawings for the stripe are probably a bit confusing as there is no reference to any known measureable point on the front of the body in that drawing. However, if you use the "body checking dimensions" sheets in the AIM, you can determine the location of a few points that can be used as a reference. The best example would be the front view of the body that shows the dim from the "0" line to the center of the gap between the hood and the front panel. That dim is shown as 43.80". From this dim, you can come up with the near exact location of the forward point of the stripe by doing the math. (I don't have a 67 AIM here so I don't have the dimension)
The "0" line is usually a point on the body, minus any front end components, that is the furthest forward. This point is probably several inches forward of the firewall. If I remember correctly, it's measured at the forward tip of the body mount, or possiblt at the C/L of that mount but I don't remember for sure. Either way, it's not important as the reference point that we just discussed is much easier to locate and more accurate.
Find the dim in the 67 sheet for the forward tip of the stripe. Subtract the 43.80" and that will be the dim that was SUPPOSED to be used.
I think one error that people make while trying to lay out, or figure out, the dim's of the stripe is the fact that all the dim's in the AIM are supposed to be taken from a horizontal line, or datum, NOT along the surface of the panel. Because the panels don't follow a horizontal line, the measurements will be inaccurate if measured along the surface on an existing stripe. I suppose it's possible this particular set of dim's IS actually to be measured along the surface but that's not the way it's done in most cases.
I'm trying to get these as exact as possible. Obvious points at the "opening" & the emblem are key. If these are not what the factory used, how did they measure? I remember reading that AOS had trouble with this thus all BB ended up been prod in SL.
Mike, you brought up an important point that I overlooked.
Using the AIM sht C3, which shows that the hood opening is 43.79-43.80 from line F.O.D. (where ever that point is...), establishes a point (hood opening) from which a measurement can be made as you've suggested.
The tip of the solid stripe should be -50" minus -43.80" = 6.2" from the edge of the hood opening. The tip of the .12" stripe will then be approximately 7.2" from the edge of the hood opening.
I wish I had this info when I painted my stripe......
Thanks
