Hi to all. I'm having problems getting my 54 to run right. The engine is fresh and the carbs were pro rebuilt. The problem seems to be electrical which leads me to the distributor. The rest of the electrical components are new. I have an old Chilton's which generally covers 1946-1957 passenger cars. It states that the vertical movement of the distributor shaft should be between .003" and .008". Mine measures .133" but the cam contact marks are about in the center of the gear. The distributor appears to have never been disassembled since the gear is staked on and there does not show any signs of ever having a shim between the gear and the housing. Can someone tell me what is correct? Thanks.

Re: 54 Distributor
most 235, sb and bb chevy distributors i've rebuilt have way more than .008" endplay and the excess clearance never seemed to affect ignition performance.i'd go ahead and remove the gear and shim to about .01 end play but i doubt it'll change the 235's performance.what are the symptoms of the 235's mal-performance? mike- Top
