Z06 brakes in a 63 roadster ?

Can't make any sense...
The ZO6 package included fuel injection and finned drum brakes with vented backing plates. It sounds like someone has retrofitted a dual master cylinder. Can you describe the drums and shoe types better. Are the drums finned? Do the shoes have the friction material arranged in separate segments, or is it continuous?

Re: Z06 brakes in a 63 roadster ?
John --- All I can say is that there were rumors of a few factory convertible Z06's (minus tank, of course). The contemporary GM literature allowed that it could be ordered in either body style, although it would be a stretch to find it in an automatic. There was (is ?) one around Edmonton, Alberta in the mid-70's; owned by a locally well-known Corvette guy and used for autocrossing. He wasn't the original owner.
Have you contacted GM Canada for delivery info ? (no optional equip records were kept by them until '67). My records show it was shipped (from St,Louis ?) on Feb 19th, and delivered to Montreal dealer # 6631 (or 86631 under current 5-digit system), shipping order # 199107, and it was paint code 941A, with interior 2490 (ie. non-std, non-leather). Dealer # 6631 was one of the half dozen or so through which most Quebec Corvettes were sold. I believe it's name is Boulevard Pontiac Buick; not sure whether the same name in '63. I should know where it is (being an ex-Montrealer) but maybe Rick Snow or Mike Ward who lurk on this NDB, could help.- Top

How many Z06 roadsters
I believe Chevrolet made the late (revised) Z06 package available on roadsters. The late Z06 package did not include K0s or the big tank. Chevy did this after Dick Guldstand built a Z06 roadster from components off a coupe, and raced it successfully on the West Coast. Maybe one or more of the Z06 experts on the Board can confirm how many, if any, of the 199 '63 Z06 cars were roadsters.

Huh? Whah?
Time to go to school Mommy?
Oh, Hi Wayne.
John,
If this car was in Quebec recently, I may be able to trace some history on it if you can give me some more details. As Wayne mentioned, might want to call GM Canada first to see what they have on file.

Re: Z06 brakes in a 63 roadster ?
John --- Don't sell that car ! [or at least the Z06 components]. The embossement on your master cylinder matches exactly the description found in Eric Gill's article in the RESTORER # 7 Vol 2 (Fall 1980). You may have read one of the figures wrongly, as it should read E48327 (not 321). Does it have a large screw-on top, like for a pickle jar ? This is a single reservoir, dual circuit master cylinder.
Let us know; we're all holding our breath.- Top

Re: Z06 brakes in a 63 roadster ?
Hello John
Yes there were a couple of Z06 converts built, or at least have been reported on the last Z06 survey, ( I'm not positive they are confirmed). There were no restriction on your serial # as far as body styles. But it did have to be an L84 as stated. I agree that GM Canada can supply information on Canadian cars- dealership, etc. Waynes' take on the casting # is right on KELSEY HAYES E 48327 RI (the R1 is stamped in) Time to take a good look at everything associated with the Z06 option. Brakes and suspention are all unique! Write down every part and serial # you can find for brakes and such. Take pictures and document everything. You can contact me direct and I will confirm what I kmow about this or put you in contact with other Z06 owners that are FAR more knowledgeable than me. The challange for you here is to chase the history if your components all check out. If you have a Z06 equiped roadster you truely may have a rare beast. Good luck Larry- Top

Re: Also
Much of these internal components are often discarded even on real McCoy original Z06 cars that have been driven. Clearance between fan blades and drum components was 'slender' at best and a ding here/there and bye bye....
Also, it was popular for original as well as subsequent owner to buy and install functional Z06 sub-assemblies to 'beef' the car for competiton and/or agressive street use. VERY COMMON among the raceing crowd who also had access to these parts in new or used condition.
Best bet here, is for poster to make direct contact with GM Canada (as well as his local NCRS Canadian chapter) to check directly on the car's configuration vs. guesstimate by 'autopsy' as we are forced to do Stateside based on the absense of original mfgr records. Canada enjoys the advantage of having the original records on import still available from GM!- Top
