Re: 255 Coupes plus Convertibles
------Put a gear (preferably 4:56) in that thing, loosen up the torque converter a bit and hang on for dear life. An old friend had one of these way back and it could not be beat on the street. The thing was ferocious!!! One of these is on my short-list........Bill S- Top

A neighbor of mine has an all-original '71 LS-6 THM-400; here's a photo of the THM tag from it.

Re: 255 Coupes plus Convertibles
The "Hydra-Matic Systematic Trouble Shooting" manual from GM in about 73 shows that the "CY" was used from 69 to at least 73. Unfortunately, it doesn't give model identification or usage. Incredible amount of differences for clutch disc count, composition, piston and return spring part numbers etc etc. I believe the CY was the only unit that used a 6 clutch pack for the direct clutch, instead of the usual four or five. Also, there were no wave/cushion steel clutch plates. All were flat which added to the firmness of the shift. All of the unique part numbers for the 6 disk clutch and unique piston are listed but I'm pretty sure none of these numbers are available today.
Basically, the same applies to the forward and intermediate clutch packs for the CY unit. More unique part numbers and clutch count.
If I remember correctly, the control body was also unique to the "CY".- Top
