    1963 LUK Problem

I installed a LUK clutch in my 63 SWC 340HP project. The 63 is 99% done and I hope to test drive it as soon as the rain stops. I did drive it into the trailer and from the trailer into the alignment shop and the same process to get it home. There was no noise in the clutch system. The other night a friend and I were re-setting the valves and timing when there was a squealing sound. If the pedal clutch rod was pushed slightly to the front of the car the squeal went away. If you push the rod toward the rubber stop or inside of the car the squeal gets worse. The free play is set by the 63 manual. Any ideas of what is happening and how to fix it?

    Thanks for any help!

Sound like it could be the throw out bearing! Hopefully it isn't. John

      Hi! John

Could you explain why it would only make the noise when in the full release position? If I adjust the free play to move the bearing toward the clutch or remove the return spring from the clutch pedal assembly the noise stops.

      Thanks Ray

Ray, I havea similar squeel when depressing myalmost new LUK three finger almost to the floor and "jocking" the pedal abck and forth in that area. I'm going to live wth it(not very objectionable). I think the noise. May be due to the clutch fork and the throw out bearing finding surfaces on each other that they don't like. Hence the squeel. Regards, JIm

Happened with my 1970 when it was six weeks old. I lived with it for 20 years, and finally my "buddies" in the local NCRS chapter got me worried enough that I changed the throw-out bearing. There was no visible sign of damage, and the old bearing looked like it would have lived another 20 years -- but the noise was gone. I'm looking forward to it coming back, but I now have had 16 noise free years -- and I no longer get stares from by-standers -- at least not for that noise.

Many years ago when I was driving brand '65 I went thru 2 Chevrolet throw-out bearings in a short period of time under warranty. My old friend Timmy Grabiak sold to forget the free GM throw out bearings. He said go buy a Federal Bearing and bring it to the dealership. I did and no more squealing. Maybe the 7000 RPM full throttle shifts had something to do with it. Remember those days Clem?
Old Federal parts number is CO-1182B. Don't know if it's a good number today.
