    C2 Steering Column

I've noticed that my upper steering mast is loose as, with the steering wheel in my hands, I can move it up and down about a 1/8 inch or so. Is the fix as simple as popping off the horn button and tightening the large nut within the steering column?

    Re: C2 Steering Column

    John,

If it's a standard column, then the locking clamp might have come loose from the bottom of the column, releasing all of the preload on the bearings. You should readjust the bearing preload per the instructions in the Shop Manual. A worse but more unlikely scenario, is that your upper and/or lower bearings have failed, which will require a complete rebuild.

The tele column should present a similar fix, with some additional factors, but I cannot give solid advice on the tele column.

      Re: C2 Steering Column

Well I am in the process of dealing with this now. I found quite a surprise when I removed my steering wheel hub and found what in the attached picture.

I have an active post at the corvetteaction.com in the C1/C2 section that a fellow had posted some great photos that give you a better idea of what it supposed to look like.

Best of luck with it, I also thought I just needed to replace my upper bearing

        You need a new tube

Looks like at least 2 of the 3(?) tabs are snapped off. One was broken on my car and could never get snug steering -- always some unwanted axial or lateral movement.

My lower bearing [inner race] was gone (just the bearing support was left on the tube) and this had been cutting into the steering shaft for a long time (previous owners) -- it was 50% worn through.

Fortunately, both the tube and shaft are available as reproductions, so it's pretty much a matter of disassembly, inspection, replace and reinstall. The '64 Shop manual supplement has some good illustrations.

My tube was in the same shape... A mess. I ordered one from Corvette Central. It looks good, but I haven't installed it yet
