    C2 Restoration Battery

    Members,
This question was asked several weeks ago, but the thread took a technical turn before an exact answer was given.

Question: Does the gell-cell Restoration Battery judge any different from its lead-acid counter part? If I understand correctly, the Restoration lead-acid, poly tar battery receives a 30% deduct.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

    Regards,
    Gene

What batteries do not take a hit? (1964) And who sells?

Gel Cell would be my first choice.

I dont know why or if they do get a 30% hit, I have had my cars judged (a 56, 67) with the acid and gell type and have not lost anything, Restoration battery.I would not use anything but a gell-type today, their great! If any one got a 30% hit could you tell us why? Thanks Phil 8063

Phil, Have you looked at the new "tar" top batteries? The tops are hard plastic instead of tar. See page 21 of the "NCRS Judging Reference Manual". Deduct 30%-Reproductions differing from original design and "construction" in minor detail." That's why the big hit. Still a nice looking battery but not as correct as the old tar tops a few years ago which didn't get any point deduction. I use Restoration Battery for my cars and have done so for many years. Luckily I have new one that's been sitting in the box for 15 years for the '63 so it should fly when judged. All it needs is acid and charged. John

could you just put some tar on the top? just a little to get it past?

There are a few clever individuals in the hobby that have taken black strip caulk and "made" tar tops for their batteries.

              Yes...

When I had my 396 at a Chevy Vettfest show, it was set in their 'March of Time' display (one car representing each year of production) next to a low milage '66 BB with less than 10K miles on the clock and it's original owner present. He'd taken EXCELLENT care of the car and preserved EVERY factory original part that wore out over time including the battery.

When the original Delco battery bit the dust, he 'gutted' the case, installed a low profile, sealed, lead acid battery inside the original case and jury rigged the original Delco top posts in place. Then, he cut the original Delco plastic filler orfices off, poured in hot tar, and set the fillers in place.

Others thought it was either the original battery or some kind of early reproduction unit. But, I noticed the lack of underlying 'bulges' surrounding the individual cells (the top of the tar was uniformly flat) and he congratulated me on my eye. I saluted his effort because there WERE individual pieces of his factory correct/original Delco battery STILL PRESENT on the car!
