Re: pace car wheels
hang on to the old wheels, I would think you coud re do them for a lot less than a new set of repops. they have a red stipe on them. I would think you could reapint it after you buffed them out a then shot clear on them. I think eastwood has a paint that would work on the stripes.- Top

Bill
My suggestion is to pick up a pinstriping wheel...like a Beugler pinstriping gun. You can pick them up at Eastwood (see link). If you measure the width...let me know what you find. I believe you'll find the gun will cost much less than one wheel.
I'm lead to believe the red stripe was applied in a similar fashion. I've never detected any indications of a decal and when studying Pace Car build sheets and decal sets...have seen no evidence of a wheel decal. However, I have seen faded wheel pin stripes to the extent that the alloy was exposed where the paint once was.
Pace Car build sheets call out a YJ8 wheel...same as all others in 78 but there are other codes called out when Z78 is specified that do not appear on other 78 build sheets. I suspect these codes call out the red paint stripe for the wheels but haven't confirmed this idea. Hope this helps

Re: pace car wheels
Bill, I have done a couple of sets of these wheels. They are a major PITA to do but look like new when finished. Strip the clear and the stripe, after taking a measurement to ascertain the location, and procede to polish the wheels. After polish wash them with PrepSol or equivilent. Rinse the wheels in a very mild phosporic acid wash, diluted enough not to stain the wheels. This will give the paint and clear something to "bite" as the aluminum is very slick after polishing. Paint the stripe on, the Buehler strip tool is a good way to do it. I used One Shot lettering paint. Black out the slots and clear the wheels with a good urethane.
Of course, you being the talented painter that you are, you did not need these instructions, but I thought that other readers might benefit.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: pace car wheels
Every "real" set of Pace Car wheels I have ever seen are different than the regular YJ8 wheels delivered on non Pace Cars in that the flat surface where the stripe is applied has small "Hash marks" vertically in/under the red stripe. It looks like these hash marks/stripes were mechanically rolled on the wheels with a die under pressure.
Anyone else ever notice this?- Top
