Re: corvette catalog
Hi Eddie:
I think most agree, he isn't going to win the popularity award but, if you need and he is the one who has it, you are left with little choice and , often, he has it, his pricing is usually reasonable and the quality good. Just don't ask him for a date !

Re: corvette catalog
Eddie------
I am going to repeat something that I've said on this subject many times. The "Good Doctor" can be a bit cantankerous at times. But, his catalog is the best in the business, his prices fair including those for many NOS items "sprinkled" throughout his catalog, his shipping usually fast and accurate, his quality generally excellent, and he carries a lot of the "little stuff" that some of the major vendors don't want to bother with. A very pleasant purchasing experience can be had if one follows the following simple formula:
1) He does not accept telephone orders for catalogs. If you want a catalog, send $4 to the address which you can find in just about any of his advertisements in the major Corvette mags.
2) When you receive the catalog, carefully review the ordering and sales policies outlined in the first few pages of his catalog.
3) When you have perused his catalog and are ready to order, fill out one of the order forms which you will find in his catalog and fax or mail it to them. Be sure to follow all of the instructions contained in his sales and ordering policies and be sure to fill out the form completely, accurately, and legibly.
That's all there is to it.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

BULL!!!
Old Jess ripped off my head and (*&^ down my throat last week over nothing! Have you seen the 'bully pulpit' sermon on how screwed up factory concours organizations are (NOTICE, page 8, of Volume 6 catalog)?
While NCRS and NCCB are not called out by name, the apersions cast are indellibly clear. I think Vinnie, Roy, and Tom and our elected BoD ought to have a heart to heart chat with old Jess....
Heck, if it weren't for the volunteer blood, sweat and tears core research of folks like us, he'd not have much of a business or be able to balley hoo, as he does, 'correct', 'original', Etc. on each/every page of his catalogs. Plus, Lord help you when/if you try to help and point out an error in the catalog on a quiet, behind the scenes, one on one basis!!!
I grew up in a family of lawyers and when I see a guy who uses his 1st amendment rights to publish checks ('scalps') collected from the Corvette catalog houses he's sued sucessfully, it turns my stomach! It's one thing to have a personal opinion, and quite another to use your business reputation/distribution literature to 'bad mouth' the competition and put down non-profit leadership of the hobby.
He skirts thin ice in the above referenced NOTICE and does NOTHING to justify his position(s) as to why he's right and the rest of the world is wrong, crazy, Etc. It's one thing to have a set of drawings that showed GM had multiple suppliers of a given part, and quite another to DEMONSTRATE/PROVE that this/that supplier actually sent parts to the St. Louis Assy plant [what date(s)?] that were actually configured into customer delivered Corvettes [what VIN sequence?].
So, instead of being bent out of shape by judges and the judging process that have richocheted on him and his 'correct' 'original' assertions from time to time, I'd say hoist your pants, use the priviledges you as a GM Licensee have to access the drawing system, do more primary research and JOIN with us and HELP us improve rather than throw stones.
Note: the above commentary is a personal opinion and does not reflect NCRS policy or the opinions of any NCRS officers or directors.
Sincerely, Jack Humphrey- Top

Re: BULL!!!
Jack-----
You only sufferred the fate you did because you didn't follow the procedure I laid out. Following that procedure for years, I've NEVER had a bit of trouble with him and, with one minor exception that was really my own fault, I've always been very satisfied with his parts and his service.
Are there any mistakes in his catalog? Not too many, actually, but I have found a few(as one might find in just about any catalog, even GM's). Have I informed him about the mistakes? No. Why? Because he didn't ask me. If he asks me, I'll tell him.
His catalog is the best 4 bucks I ever spent. I wouldn't be without his latest edition. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: BULL, Right On Jack!!!!
I have had my run ins with The Dr. Jeckel years ago when I was young and nieve. Now I'm young and nieve. (corvette hobby!)
One thing I have learned in the last 20 years working at and running my fathers bussiness. (servicing the handicap community) Your customers are doing you a favor by buying from you. You should be as curtious and helpfull as possible and thank them for their bussiness when your done. Some people have alot less time on their hand than Joe Lucia and do not want to wait for the US mail to bring a written begging letter requesting a catalog . (which should be FREE) People are fools for doing bussiness with someone who only cares about their wallets. To much of that happening in this country! My opion only? For what it's worth. There are too many other venders out there to have to deal with that attitude.- Top

Actually, if he cared only about your wallet...
...and not his own quality of life, he would suck up to you to make every sale. But he seems more interested in streamlining his dealings with the general public than grabbing every possible dollar.
Think about it from his perspective for a second. He prints a catalog which is more like a parts manual, does give it to you free if you actually BUY something and very clearly tells you the rules of his game up front.
I have been to his place and they are nice folks, in person, especially his wife. They let you look through every part in the place trying to find NOS stuff in the bins instead of repro, if they have it. I can tell you also that the phones never stop ringing. Think how many Corvette wannabes he must get calls from every hour and how much money he would lose if he allowed them to tie up the phone lines.
The general rule of business may be that the customer is always right but that's not required. If he wants to burn folks off, that's his right. You go into your own business not just for the money but to be able to do things your way and for your own reasons. Maybe quality of life, namely not putting up with non-compliant, two bit customers, is one of the financial/business decisions he has made. Being in my own business, I can't say I disagree with the guy.

Re: corvette catalog
I have found that when dealing with Dr. Rebuild, following the rules is important. Send 4-bucks for the catalog, be ready when you call in the order and everything will be fine. It's a great catalog, well illustrated and the pricing is fair. I've had no problems and recommend the "Dr." to friends.- Top

Act Naturally (Dr. Rebuild version)
I think it's just another sign of the times that we're living in. I've haven't had the pleasure of using the "good Doctor" and never really heard of him until everyone started griping about him here. I guess if I really needed something he had and could find it NOWHERE else, then I would use him. I figure it's about like eating at McDonald's. If I was starving to death, then for all I would care, I'd jump through hoops and then they could throw the food out the window at me. (If I was staving to death.)
But anyhow, it's time to lighten up a little. Sometimes we take this Corvette-parts-stuff too seriously. Here's a little ad-libbed ditty (it's the Dr. Rebuild Version). Come on, Uncle Jack, sing along. This one's for you:
They're gonna call me Dr. Re-build, / They're gonna hate my person-al-it-y. / When I get done they'll never know what hit them, / And all I gotta do is, Act Naturally!
(Chorus): Well I'll bet you, I'll put you in the Top-Flight, / Don't care if I am told-to, go-to-hell. / If you want parts, then you will do it my way, / Cause I can sell them paaarts so well.
Well you're gonna fol-low all of my instructions, / You'll dot each "i", and cross your every "t". / I'll make it so you hate to phone-in ord-ers, / And all I gotta do is Act Naturally!
(Chorus Instrumental)
They'll make a scene about a man that wants good ser-vice, / And beggin down upon his bended knee. / Won't play the part, and I don't need rehearsin', / All I gotta do is Act Naturally!
