Speedo resto

I'm having my speedometer restored, and was curious as to odometer setting. I am doing a full restoration of my 54, and am tempted to set the odo at 00000, versus going back to the actual mileage. What is the consensus out there?

Go to 00000. Unless you are the original owner or have all correct documentation the actual mileage will always be in question. Whatever the mileage indicates since it only went to 99,999 is there a 1 or a 2 in front of it, 100k or 200k???

Keep it, nothing wrong with that ,36,000 like my 55 when I got it, that way I know what the milage is on my 55 which is now over 113000.

I would reset it to 0000 ! First, you probably don't know the true actual mileage. Second, after a full restoration it is "new". JMO

I didn't reset mine because I knew it was the actual and the speedo still works. Just remember what it was before you restored it for history's sake.

Don't forget that, if you set the odometer to zero, you have another decision to make--what do you put on the tachometer rev counter?

Check with the local authorities having jurisdiction. In Florida when my '67 was restored, the AHJ indicated that, since restoration was total, the odometer could be reset to 0. As to the rev-counter, a new car in 1954 usually had approx. 3 to 7 miles on the odometer and the rev-counter would have had a corresponding number. I've heard that by the time speedos were installed clocking 0, the rev-counter already registered 8 to 9.
