Which pump is correct for a 69 L36.....

The one on the left with the shorter inlet or the one on the right with the taller inlet?

    Thanks

Greg, I would tend to lean toward the RH pump with the longer "neck". Is it stamped 40709?

The pump on the left is stamped JH40659 and the one on the right is stamped 009H40482.

      A little back ground info:

When I bought the car in 88 the pump on the left was on it. I had a fuel supply issue so I changed the pump with a new one from GM which is the one on the right so I know the right one is not original to the car. This didn't fix the problem so both pumps should still be good.

However I don't know if the one on the left is original either. I'm thinking that the one with the longer neck looks correct but I'm not really sure.

      Hope this helps.

Greg, I may have typed the answer too soon. The 40659 has an application of 1967-69 427 and so does the 40482 according to the AC Delco interchange. The 53-70, revised 4-1-1970, Corvette parts book lists the 659 pump for a base engine '70, the 482 is for a 3 X 2 and the 709 for a '69-70 SHP 350. There is no listing for the 482 pump in this catalog.

Hopefully when Joe Lucia gets back from vacation he can give us the history of usage of these pumps.

          Dick and Greg-----

The AC type 40659 was the fuel pump originally used in PRODUCTION for 1968-1969 Corvettes with L-36. In original SERVICE this pump was known as GM #6417338.

The AC type 40482 was the fuel pump originally used in PRODUCTION for 1968-69 Corvettes with L-68, L-71, and L-88. In SERVICE it was/is known as GM #6416741.

The GM #6417338 aka AC type 40659 fuel pump was discontinued from the GM parts system in 1970 and replaced by a succession of part numbers, finally the GM #6416741 aka AC type 40482. The type 40659 may have been available through the Delco parts system well after that time, though, and may even have been available until recently.

You will note that the 40659 has the "short" inlet valve chamber and the 40482 has the "long" chamber valve. For 68-69 PRODUCTION, the "short" inlet valve chamber pumps were used primarily for Rochester-equipped engines. The "long" chamber types were used for Holley-equipped engines, both big block and small block. In later SERVICE, though, the "long" inlet chamber pumps were used for both Rochester and Holley equipped engines.

Fuel Starvation - was Which pump is correct for a

Late response, but I have an idea if you still have fuel delivery problems.

I had fuel starvation with my '68 L36. I went the route of the higher performance application pump, hoping for more flow. I still had the problem up until I put it in storage.

Taking it out just recently, I had the tank out and was cleaning it. I pulled the sender out of the bottom to remove some foreign objects and found the strainer in really bad shape. It had cracked along much of it and would fold flat easily.

I think my starvation was the screen closing on me. I haven't got the car back on the road yet to find out, but you might check since you seemed to have the same problem and same results so far on the same engine.
