My question is, how much distance should there be between the fan/pulley flange and the pump body bearing shoulder on a 3856284 water pump?
Here's why I need to know...
My cooling fan recently started hitting the lower fan shroud on hard braking. It's been getting progressively worse. It seemed the engine was moving fwd with the inertia. I checked the engine mounts, everyting solid, tight & not separated.
Today I took the H20 pump pully off to check for anything I could find that might cause the interference and found the H2O pump shaft & bearing had started to migrate out of the pump body about 1/8". I tapped it back into the body with a small brass hammer, but now the bearing & shaft bind. Time for a rebuild.
The pump was rebuilt once before, and it must have been off just a bit as the clearance with the fan shroud has always been tight. I'm going to get the pump (orginal dated) rebuilt again, but want to make sure the specs are right so I don't have the same problem. Thanks in advance.
