    THM350 Governor won't come out!

I recently installed a "shift point kit" in my THM 350 tranny, trying to get it to shift at ~5000 RPM at WOT instead of 4000. The kit includes new springs and weights for the governor. Well, the result is that I have to manually shift the tranny or it will never downshift from 3rd gear. So, I was going to take out the governor, re-install the factory weights and springs, and hopefully get things back to normal. Problem is, the governor does not seem to want to pull right out, like it did when I installed the kit. I have a suspicion that the gear is stripped and therefore keeping it from sliding out easily. Any ideas on the situation and how to get the governor out? Any advise would be much appreciated! Thanks!

    John,

If you can move the governor in and out slightly, you may have a gear problem. If it doesn't move at all, even with a slight amount of force, it's very possible that the governor bore in the transmission case is damaged. This may have occured as a result of some distortion or damage on the barrel valve of the governor. If scored or damaged, the valve will quickly destroy the bore in the transmission case.

Damage to the barrel may have occured when you replaced the springs/weights if you clamped the governor in a vise, even gently, while replacing these parts.

I've seen these things bound up so tightly in cases that the case would be turned in under warranty with the governor still stuck permanently. Problem is, the aluminum case expands at a rate roughly twice that of the steel barrel of the governor when heated to operating temp. If the surface becomes scored and enlarged, it shrinks down when cooled and produces a press fit.

Hopefully, you caught the problem before this bore was damaged badly. Very precise tolerances here and very specific surface numbers. (smooth)

Yeah, I can move the governor in and out a bit and I can also twist it a bit, so I'm hoping the bore isn't seized. If that is the case and I have a gear problem, any suggestions on how I remove the governor?

        John,

It just occured to me.. you mentioned that the transmission wouldn't come back to 1st gear at a stop unless you manually shifted into 1st speed. That means the internal valve inside the governor is sticking also. Something tells me this governor body was slightly bent or distorted somehow during the process of replacing the springs/weights. That would account for both the "no downshift" and the fact that you can't get the governor out of the bore.

With a little luck, the governor will come out of the bore. I've removed these before but it's been too many years and I can't remember how I did it. Once removed, the governor will tell us what happened and if there is damage to the case.
