    56 starter solenoid hangs

I just rebuilt the solenoid for my 56 and occasionally(pretty frequently) sticks in the ring gear and doesnt return. I have to disconnect the battery to get it to stop turning over. Turning the key off doesnt stop it. There's an adjustment link on the solenoid, but I am not sure how to set it correctly, other than just randomly change it. Anyone have any experience on this problem.

Sounds like the disc is arcing and sticking to the battery cable stud causing the starter to continue to run.

I suppose it could be doing this but why, the posts and the disc was all bright and shiny when I put it together and it stuck the second time I started the car.

Recheck your rebuilt, that the little spring was put in right, the link adjustment determines how far the gear is engaged to the flywheel , try shortening it.

The starter on my '56 was just rebuilt by a local shop and the link from the solenoid to the lever is positioned on the hole furtherest from the lever pivot. I have a picture, but not sure how to insert it in this response. I don't have the problem you're experiencing.
