How well do the current GM replacement exterior door handles fit/compare to orginial?
My passenger handle broke and I want to replace both because the driver side is pitted. I have seen the GM handles for about $75 each.

There's basically two types of repo handles available right now- a higher price unit that comes in a GM box and a lower price one (around $30.00) that's only good for the lower end of a plumb bob.

Yours might be the higher price one and is the best your going to do.

I have used both and the GM quality was one good and one the handle hung up from day one. I will pay the $20. for the repo. as they have all worked good for me. They all will take a hit from some judges.

Lyle, I think that there are at least two reproduction handles besides the GM one. One is of very poor quality and the other is somewhat acceptable. I do not know who makes either nor do I know who is importing them.

Tom Keen had them made at least 5 years ago and I found them to be OK for service. Yogi had a display door with a handle at Bloomington this year so he may also be having them made.

Can my orginial door handle be welded. Mine broke on the bottom side which would not show if repaired . The parts fell inside the door and I was able to locate them. I just need a pic of the orintation of the springthat keeps tension on the lever that moves the door latch. ( I have on ideal what it called)

The low cost ones that I alluded to above have a very weak mechanism underneath. Typically, when it fails your door is jammed shut and you have to find the copy of the Restorer with Tom Russo's article on how to get it open again.

Tom and Yogi's seem to be ok, but there is a very poor quality repro ou there also

Think I would start looking for a used one, after reading all the above.

I have a pair of used el-cheapos you can have for free. One is presently used for a plumb bob, the other as a door stop for the shop.

Both have been smacked with a hammer to teach them a lesson.
