    '64 Oil Cannister

The cannister bottom bolt holds the cannister in place.Does the can screw off or just loosens and pulls down?

The bolt holds the entire assembly in place. The cannister itself is not threaded - the filter insert comes with a gasket that seals the upper edge of the cannister to the block. The bolt does not screw out of the cannister - there are retaining washers and springs inside that hold it in place. I've never taken one apart, so I can't give any details on taking it apart, but I think it has been covered in the archives.

The cannister should drop as you back off the bolt, but you might have to wiggle the cannister a bit to break it loose from the gasket.

I change the gasket every couple of filter changes. Remove the two 7/16" hex bolts to remove the cast aluminum bypass valve housing. Then remove the old gasket and carefully install the new one and be sure it is propertly seated. Reinstall the bypass valve housing. There's no need for a gasket between the bypass valve housing and block.

I screwed it up once and dumped three quarts of oil on the garage floor before I realized the problem, so check for leaks immediately after starup.

        Mark,

The order of assembly is as follows:

Bolt, copper sealing ring (washer), canister, spring, retainer clip.
