    SB valve springs....3911018 vs VS677

Are the speed pro VS677 valve springs functionally equivalent to the GM 3911068 spring? Pricing on the speed-pros are in the neighborhood of $25 while 16 of the 3911068s are close to $100. Is there a GM part number for a set (16) of the 3911068s which brings the pricing down? I am using the OE 839 hydraulic for a 1965 300hp rebuild.

    Thanks

VS677 have no internal damper like the GM 068.

Re: SB valve springs....3911018 vs VS677

I don't have a VS677 listing in my Speed Pro catalog, but most of the listed SB cams call out the VS1008, which has a higher seat force and rate than the 068. It is a spring/damper type.

The F-M Speed Pro product line is a "performance product"line, so many parts are not OE equivalent, but F-M should have an equivalent to the 068 in their standard OE replacement product line.

The 068 springs are more than adequate for the 839
"300 HP" replacement cam. With a mechanical lifter cam they are good to about 7200.

      So what is the VS677?

Re: SB valve springs....3911018 vs VS677

The Speed-pro spec for the VS677 valve spring looks roughly equivalent to the "068" spring but alot cheaper. SP shows the following spec (values for "068" in parenthesis):

        OD 1.172 (1.214)
        Max Lift .490
        Closed Pressure 80# (80#)
        Closed Height 1.70 (1.70)
        Open Pressure 200#
        Open Height 1.25
        Coil Bind Height 1.150 (1.150)
        Approx Rate/inch 267# (267#)

Any GM part number for a set of 068s?

        Thanks all!

That looks close, but Clem said it doesn't have a damper.

I don't know if a set of 16 068 is available from GM, but a dealer could tell you or maybe Joe can chime in.

I'm still interested where you got the VS677 number since it's not listed in my Speed Pro catalog.

What is the p/n for the F-M OE replacement product line (not Speed Pro) replacement for the 068? If the price is right, they should be exact equivalents to the O68. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if F-M manufactures the 068 for GM.

Re: VS677 is listed in the F/M performance parts

No need to scan now. I've got X-3009, but it's a 1995 version. Under the SB cam listings it references the VS1008 spring, and VS1008 is included on the spring specs page, but not VS 677.

Are you sure it says spring only for VS677 and not a spring-damper type? From the specs is sounds identical to the 068 except for the lack of a damper.

Rather than using a "Speed Pro" spring, the standard OE replacement spring from F-M should be used, and I'd like to get that p/n.

catalog but there are no VS1008 springs listed in my 1996 catalog. VS1008 is a TRW# = to F/M VS739R

The vs677 part spec shows on the FM website. The springs are available through on-line retailers at around $25 a set.

I do not have nor can I find any on-line info on the FM OE replacement springs. The FM website only shows speed-pro aftermarket. Hmmmmmmmmm

I will check again with a GM dealer on a part number for 16 of the 068s.

Check local parts stores to you - one that is a F-M dealer and can give you a p/n for the OE replacement spring. Be sure you tell then '67-up as this was the first use of the 068 spring that replaced the earlier SB spring.

Hey guys, I'm looking at the VS677 spring as well for my head project and in the comments section from the federal mogul site it states: "Includes Damper"

                          Re: VS 677

Do a little googling on VS677 and 3911068. VS677 is available from NAPA online for $2.29, and other sources as low as $1.49. Photos and specs say it has a damper.

Try cross referencing 3911068 on the NAPA online site or other parts sites.

I'm reasonably convinced that VS677 is the F-M OE replacement for the 3911068, but it's your guy's engines, so do enough research to convince yourselfs that this is the right part.

check with a auto parts who has them in stock

either my catalog,no damper or the website, includes damper, is incorrect
