    C3 Steering Box Adjustment

I'm looking to make the adjustment on the steering box to hopefully take up some play. After breaking the nut loose, do you turn the adjusting screw in or out to firm it up?

Turn it clockwise. Go easy with it. Better yet, if you're unfamiliar with the process, then carefully follow the procedure outlined in your Shop Manual. A small amount of lash is necessary for reliable operation of the gear..........insufficient clearance will cause premature failure f the unit.

If you have steering with too much play I doubt it is in the gearbox or the adjustment. It is only a guess trying to just crank down the adjustment. I would remove the gearbox and rebuild it and in the process you may find the rag joint is the cause of the looseness. In taking off the arm you may find a problem in that area. The adjustment of the lash as I do it can only be done with the steering box disconnected on both ends. I can then feel the high spot as I was instructed by one of the well known rebuilders at a Bloomington class.
