What is the recommended procedure for polishing the original wheels on a 78? They are in good shape, but very dull. I don't have a good reference of what they should look like. Any good resources would be helpful.

Re: C3 wheels
Remove the clear lacquer paint...probably now yellowed with age. Once you've removed the lacquer and depending on condition use the polish of choice.
Mine had begun to pit and I used OOOO steel wheel followed by wheel polish and now they shine.Tom Russo

Re: C3 wheels
Thanks! I was not sure how shiny they should be, but they look too dull to me. What did you use to remove the clear finish?- Top

Re: C3 wheels
Lacquer paint remover but work with it very carefully so not to splash on body paint. I used a small brush and worked in small areas. Of course probably a better idea is to remove the wheel.Tom Russo

Re: C3 wheels
Doug,
I did mine with very fine sanding paper : first I used a wet 400 grid and then worked up 600,800, 1200 grid. As I final procedure I polished them with some aluminum polish (the kind you can buy in a bike store)...they shine like chrome.
The inners, which were painted black have to be repainted.

Re: C3 wheels
So were they they originally a bright finish? I wanted to make sure they were not a semi polished look. I want to be within original specs when I am done. Thanks for the information.- Top
