Correct oil pan plug for 68?

should the oil pan plug be the bolt/plug with the "A" inside a circle or something else?

This is on a 1968 BB (Feb. 68 Build)

    Thanks,

    Steve

At least according to my late -71 parts book, the flat style 7/8 head "A" configuration (or other manufacturer's variation of the same part) was used thru the '69 Corvette model year.

      Steve-----

If you had asked about any other year besides 1968, I could have provided the answer without too much difficulty. However, I believe that 1968 might have been a "year of change" with respect to this component. I think that it's possible that early 1968 may have used the "large hex" drain plug as was used on earlier applications. However, at least by the build date of your car, I think that the drain plugs had changed to the indented "small hex" style with flanged head (9/16" across-the-flats).

          Bill------

I think that the parts catalog may be in error on this one. I know, for sure, that the original drain plug on my 1969 small block was the "small hex" with flanged head. Mine was a late-build car, though. However, I have a friend that's the original owner of his early build 1969 small block and it also has the "small hex" plug. I believe that small block and big block drain plug configurations were pretty much the same for any given period of time.

The GM part number of the "small hex" plug is GM #3923420. This part number implies a 1968 model year release.

Beyond all this "theoretical stuff", I've looked at 68's that I believed to be original and they had the "small hex" drain plug. However, I didn't make note of just when in the model year they were built.

            Hi Steve
I was looking for my 68 B/B oil pan and on the pan was the original small hex nut with an A in the middle. If you need a pic send me an email. Thanks, Grant
