    Fuzzy Rear View Mirror

No, not the kind with the Dice. At cruising speed, 60-65 mph, the view in the rear view mirrow in my '65 small block 365HP roadster looks fine. ( 4:11 rear end 4 speed ) Tachometer reads about 3800 RPM at this sped Bias ply tires - have recently been balanced and the car recently aligned.

However, when I get into the throttle a little heavier, let's say 70 mph or more, there is a drive train vibration that causes the mirror to vibrate and everything begins to look fuzzy. I've done the simple things like check to make sure the mirror is tight and have my eyes tested ! The vibration is not severe enough to cause concern on my part about parts falling off - nor is there any compromise of the drivability - still tracks straight and true down the road.

when I had to work on the clutch this spring I did not mark the driveshaft to make sure i put it back in the same way as it came out. Is there a possiblity the driveshaft needs to be correctly "oriented" to the drive train - that is, should i try simply rotating the drive shaft 90-180 degrees ? The engine runs smooth and there are seemingly no transmission nor rear-end issues.

Short of driving slower ( like that's going to happen ! ) any suggestions ?

Noel - Is this the standard mirror or a day/night mirror you are dealing with? Pete

There's a 'collar' or 'bushing' that installs into the circular hole on the mirror. It's rectangular in shape.

The mounting screw that holds the mirror to the mirror mount has a shoulder on it to contact the bushing and make the mounting tension 'just right' (not too tight, not too loose) to absorb typical road vibration regardless of the exact torque applied to the mounting screw.

Without the bushing, the EXACT symptoms you describe (visual vibration) will result. The same bushing was used in standard 10-inch day/nite mirrors used on run of the mill Chevy passenger cars of the same era. Visit a scrap yard and pick one up if your factory original 8-inch mirror is missing its mounting bushing....

            Noel,

First you have to decide whether it is the mirror or the drive train. If it is a 67 day/night mirror, sometimes the gray rubber or neoprene surround which holds the mirror in place separates from the steel housing and the mirror will go all over the place at high speed. Just a spot of glue at the upper corners of the surround to the housing will solve the problem.

            Also check out Jack's fix.

But if it is the drive train, you'll have to get some advice elsewhere.
