Have a 67 Marlboro Maroon which was painted in 1983 lacquer. This paint held up exceptionally well over the years (no cracks, fading etc) Unfortunately, the other day, my left rear wheel did it's own thing and shimmied off the car while I was driving. The left rear quarter has to be replaced. There is no other visable damage. The 3 part question.....Is lacquer paint available? I was told by this body shop that it isn't. Aslo, should I just paint the fender and try to match this or should I have him shoot the whole car in 2 stage? Need some good advice here.

I can still buy all the Lacquer paint I want in PA. but I know in MD you can not buy it. it all depends where you are- Top

Lacquer is available, just not widely available. The body shop may actually not know this, or perhaps they just don't want to fool with lacquer. I bought lacquer and painted my '60 with it. Obviously, IF your guy can match the paint, it'd be better to do just that in lacquer, since it'd be cheaper and the rest of your paint is good.
Since laquer is available, if you decide to paint the whole car, it depends on what you want to do with the car whether you use lacquer or not. NCRS calls for paint that "appears" like lacquer, so you really don't have to use lacquer. Getting something else to look like lacquer is not as easy as many try to make it sound, though. As for me, the easiest way I figured I could get my paint to look like lacquer was to use lacquer.

The problem is not so much the availability of lacquer, but the lacquer it's self. Most mixing colors that were available in 1983 are no longer around. The size of the flake in the metalic component of the paint is larger. The lead is gone. It creates a real problem in getting a color match. Cars with metalic paint, when painted today, have a tendancy to look more like a House of Color custom color. Marlboro is one of the harder colors to find a correct match. It can be done, but it takes a paint jobber with the desire to help you and a painter that is very talented.Dick Whittington- Top

I got my 63 lacquer paint Sebring Silver w/fire mist from this company via Mech-Spray in the UK ---- LECHLER COATINGS in Italy. They use the Corvette paint color chips 1963-72 by CTR as their guide for correctness of color and flakes etc. My paint is an exact match to the sample lacquer chip. The paint color chip chart is avaliable through NCRS books and publications in the Drive Line. I ordered the paint and went to the UK to view and compare with the chart--- right-on!!! Had to wait to get it from Italy but well worth it. The car is painted and Ron Clark here in Denver said "what a brezze to spray". He is one of the best there is for lacquer, if not the best in my opinion!! Lacquer, the only way to go if NCRS judges see it or painters who know the biz.

-----Why would you bet "KO" when he says the car is a 67??? I think some of you guys have an anti-KO bias or something. 98% of the time KO failure is related to the installer not the assembly itself. The best method of retaining KOs is to simply put a majic-marker line from cone to spinner once you think they are tight enough and then check same at every opportunity.I have seen 67s with KOs but lately with values of "original" cars being what they are it doesnt seem like many 67 guys run them anymore. I always liked the look on a 67 because I felt those guys were sort of thumbing thier nose at Ralph Nader- Top

My brother lost a right front on a 67 coupe about 20 years ago on the freeway at about 70 mph. It had standard steel wheels. Every wheel lug sheared. My theory is the previous owner had over torqued the wheel nuts. He had only had the car about two years and had never removed the wheels.
As a matter of course I now change the lugs on any car I get.- Top

No problem Bill. I highly recommend replacemnet of studs on any vehicle you do not know the history of. When the wheel came off it took out the original 67 vintage fender. Insurance paid for the most of the repair. Of course the car will never be the same as an original body car.- Top
