Gas Gauge only reading 1/2 full

    Hi all

I posted my problem last week about my gas gauge on my 62 vette. It would read 1/2 full when I filled the tank. When I stepped on the brake pedal, it would read toward full. I was told to add a second ground wire which I did from the sending unit screw to the frame. Now when I step on the brake it does not do that no more but the problem is that the needle DOES NOT go past 1/2 full. What could be the problem now? How can I solve this problem?

    Thanks.................John

Pull the sender out keep it grounded , move the float up and down to see if the gage responds correct , if not the sender needs cleaning.

      John...

If the two "pink" wires are mixed at the ignition switch, the fuel gauge may only read "half full", when full and not return to "empty" when the switch is "off".

Re: Gas Gauge only reading 1/2 full

        Hi Dennis

The gauge goes back to empty when I turn off the ignition switch..Wire harness, sender and tank are brand new. Gauges were rebuilt. Like I said earlier, the gauge would read to 1/2 full when the tank was full. When I stepped on the brake pedal the gauge would go toward full. I put a second ground from sender to frame as per one of the members here recommended. Now the gauge does not go past 1/2 but will go to empty when ignition is off.If sender was bad why would it go toward full with one ground wire on it when I stepped on brake pedal? I will check the wires again at gauge.

        Thanks............John

A new sender dont mean it's a good sender, I'd still take it out and check it

Many people send back %50 of all repro parts before they get a good part or use them till they can find a original part. You could also hold the sender in your hand using alligator end wires connected direct to the gas gage ( near the dash) buy passing all the Corvette wiring and see what happens
