    Scott-----

No parts for your shifter remain available from GM. They wouldn't do you any good, anyway. I don't think that you have a problem with any of the parts.

I can tell you this: the shifter on my 1969 has "kissed" the rear of the console plate since they day the car was new. GM was never able to correct it and I never have, either. I replaced the shifter once with a new GM unit (not because of this problem, though) and the new shifter did the same thing as the original.

Turn your 3-4 shift rod clevises 3-5 rounds to make the rods longer. Then adjust the reverse rod to match.

There is a procedure in the service manual. Says something about shimming the mounting bracket to correct this.

It has been a long time since I worked on the shifter but I believe the neutral gate is fixed. If the 1-2, 3-4 and reverse arms are adjusted to move the handle forward, is there any way to move the neutral gate?

------Change from the frame mount to a trans mount bracket and set the shifter on short-throw. Plate and screws for same are available from Long Island. This will give you the most posative shifting factory shifter you can put together, and it wont hit the console.........Bill S

Just curious, does this cause a rattle or vibration in the shifter, that is normally isolated then the shifter is mounted to the frame away from the transmission?

                Jon,,,
-----I would say that we are in a split camp on that one. Your shifter may rattle and it may not. If it does rattle, there are things that can be done. They may work, they may not. The car that I have had (a 66 390hp) for the last 28 years has never been burdened with a rattle, and I have had two shifters in it over the years (due to agressive driving, Im afraid). Some guys think that frame mounted shifters are the way to get rid of the vibration. I think its just the easiest way. As far as I am concerned frame mounted shifters open up a whole different kettle of worms. Any wear or loosening of mounting bolts can cause the transmission to jam in two gears at the same time, for example.
----- Hopefully some of the rest of us will chime in with thier thoughts.........Bill S
