    C2 Fan Shroud & Seal?

    Members,
I have a question about assembling the flat rubber seal to the lower fan shroud on my '65, small block. Memory has failed me regarding direction of the staples.

Should the staples go through the sheet metal shroud, through the rubber, and be clinched over into the rubber or vice versa? From the looks of my shroud, it is as I've described above; but in the AIM (page E206) it looks like the stables go through the rubber seal first. What say the experts?

    Thanks for all replies.

    Regards,
    Gene

I'm quite certain the staples go through the rubber seal and get clinched on the metal side. The flaps on the a arms are that way also.

For my 64 the rubber is on top (engine side) of the metal with staples coming from bottom, going through the metal first, then into the rubber and clinched over on the rubber. I also checked my AIM (pg D108) and it looks like its the other way.

Owned car since Aug67 and do not believe that this area was modified. I would not be surprised if it is found that both are correct. Need to hear from a factory worker to find out if any fixtures were used to make connection.

Also noted on page D178 that the shield over the shock is even called to be stapled from outside (by wheel) and clintched on the inside. Guess what, mine are the opposite,ie clintched on side facing the tire.

Now you really know what to do! Note; I'm not a pro at this, so hope somebody (judge) can tell you what NCRS wants.

        Alan,
You were correct to note that the AIM is incorrect regarding the rubber inner fender splash shield. The ones on my original '65 have never been removed and they are stapled from the engine side and clinched in the fender well.

I'm reasonably sure that my fan shroud should be like your '64. I'll look at a few other cars before I staple the two parts together.

        Best regards,
        Gene
