    water pump

Cleaning out the garage, and came across a water pump that looks like a C1 vintage. Part # is 3782608, with a date code of K287.

Can anyone ID this for me ?

It's a very widely used small block, short leg waterpump casting. It was used for Corvettes beginning about 1961 and continuing through 1970. During these years it was used for virtually all small blocks with cast iron intake manifolds. For 1970, its use for LT-1 engines marked the first, and only, time it was ever used for an engine with an aluminum manifold.

It was also used for most other Chevrolet small blocks during the 1961 to 1968 period, except those few with aluminum intake manifolds.

If the driver side of the casting has reinforcing ribs, then it's a Tonawanda-cast piece and was never used on Corvettes. If it has no ribs, then it's the style used on Corvettes and many other Chevrolets.

The 3782609 pump (NOT THE 608 PUMP that you have) was used for 61 and 62 Corvettes. That had a bypass hole on the top for the fitting that has a hose to the bottom of the expansion tank. the 608 pump does not have the bypass hole. The 608 pump is probably the most common small block pump around. Every time I go to a parts store for a pump for any 55-60, they'll pull out a box with a rebuilt in it, and 90% of the time, it's a 608.

One other thing comes to mind: sometimes, casting numbers can be difficult to discern; for instance, an "8" can easily be confused with a "9". If the waterpump casting has no bypass boss/fitting on the top, then it's a '608'. If it does have such a fitting, then the last 3 digits are actually "609" and it's the pump that Mike described.

I do think that what you have is likely a '608', though. By the date, it looks like it was cast on November 28, 1967. I believe that the 3782609 was out of production by that time.
