    identifying AN sizes

    Hello,

I'm looking at some plumbing for the carb on my engine and came across the AN fittings. What are these and who can you tell the difference.

Since I'm from Europe I talked to several shops here, but the all don't know what they are. Can anyone help me ?

    Thanks

    Yves

Are you sure that they are AN fittings? If so then they are not original to your car.

AN fittings are a military spec for a class of fitting that is also used on many civilian aircraft(AN actualy stands for Army/Navy). They are a 37 degree flare where as the automotive flare is 45 degrees. Race cars often use the AN fittings because of the higher pressure hoses/tubes. They also tend to have a blue, red, yellow, black finnish and can be stainless or steel. DO NOT INTERMIX THE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLARES!

To tell the size difference is quite simple as the "dash" number of the fitting is measured in 1/16". Therefore a -4 or #4 AN fitting is for a tube size of 4/16" or 1/4". #6 AN would be for a tube size 6/16" or 3/8". #16 AN would be for a tube size of 16/16" or 1" .....and so on.

If you do a google search on these fitting you find more info than you'll ever need to know!

    Hope this helps.

    Greg

      Yves -

These are AN fittings, from #4 to #12; I keep a few on hand for project cars.
