    Re: Crower Rod Buy

Kudos to Scott for taking this one on again.

As I have said several times before, the early 327 rods up through '65 are a weak design prone to breaking and are a HUGE risk to take on any high revving engine, and I don't even trust them on a 300 HP engine.

An improved design went into production at approximately the beginning of the '66 model year, and if these pass a Magnaflux inspection, IMO they are suitable for a 300 HP engine and 5500 revs, but I consider them "iffy" for a 6000 rev L-79, and no way on a mechanical lifter cam engine with pocket ported heads that will produce useable power to 7000+ revs.

You don't want to risk your numbers matching 870 block with a set of spindly rods that have been punching holes in them since the sixties, so I urge you to take advantage of this program if you EVER anticipate a rebuild.

If you end up not using them, they will be easy to sell. Not long after the first program several guys decided they needed rods for their project, but NO ONE who participated in the program would let them go.

For a normal street engine rebuild that is not expected to be frequently disassembled for inspection like a racing engine, I recommend the pressed pin type as off-the-shelf-replacement pistons usually do not have the groove machined in the pin bore to accept a retainer for floating pins and having grooves machined will cost at least 200 bucks. For an engine that is going to be put together "forever" pressed pins are the way to go.

Manley offers a comparable "Sportmaster" rod, but the lowest price I found on a web search a couple of days ago was $625 plus shipping and any applicable tax.

    GO SCOTT!!!
