    72 350 ci distributor overhaul - questions

I am rebuilding the original tach drive distributor for my 72 small block.

    I have some questions:

    1) There was a white nylon cup shaped washer or shield at the upper
part of the distributor, right where the felt washer goes. This thing
was cracked into several pieces. It looks like it may be an oil shield.
Any idea where to get a replacement? Is there such a thing as a
    distributor rebuild kit?

    2) Where would the part number/date code be for this distributor?
    All I see are three digits/letters like "7 2 O'

    3) What color should the distributor body be painted? Engine
    color?

    4) Anything I should look out for as I rebuild this? The end play
    looks very good.

    Thanks for any advice.

Re: 72 350 ci distributor overhaul - questions

The piece you refer to is a seal that seals the upper bushing grease well. Chances are the grease well is dry though the may be "dust" in it, which is the solid remnants of the grease. Most distributor parts are available through the traditional aftermarket brands, however, the exceptions to this are the breaker plate and plastic seal. I know of no sources other than to salvage from a used distributor.

The band around the distributor base should have the part number and date code. The housing is painted dull to semigloss black - somewhat haphazardly as there are usually thin spots and/or bare spots.

The end play should be two to seven thou. Moroso and Mr. Gasket offer shim kits.

Shaft radial play should be barely detectable - about a thou. If more the shaft can wobble and affect dwell and timing. The breaker plate should fit snug on the dist. base and not wobble.

The seal is available through Corvette Central, part number #272014.
