First thanks again to everyone who provided information and suggestions a week or so ago when I asked about fit issues with a modern tire (205/75 R15) and an original carrier, bolts and tray. Here are some results after pulling the bolts, tray, tub, etc.
An original tub will accomodate a tire with a circumference of no more than 88 or 89". The Firestone Supreme SI that I purchased fit perfectly with a circumference of approx. 86". The issue was with the cross sectional width of the modern tire which I think is 8". With the standard carrier bolts, the tire wouldn't fit, or I should say the tray would not close. The solution was to install the longer gold line style carrier bolts. I also chose to install the longer tire lock bolt. With the longer bolts installed, the new tire (even at 35 psi) fit great with no issues at all. I feel better now that I have a spare that will match the rest if I ever have to use it.
