Looked at a very nice '59 98 Olds on Monday at a local Cruise. The generator rear bearing reminded me of the 1960 Corvette highest HP FI generator (no tach drive on that one). I could not read the number on the generator.
Is it similar to the 1960 1102173? Are they the same? Are others from the late 50's or 1960 also like ...1102173 ?
The generators that were set up to drive a pump had an end frame similar, if not the same, to the tach drive version. Been a long time since I've seen one without a pump on it.
Tom,
I can't address BOP generators, but the 1102173 was used on Chevy Passenger cars in '59 & '60 with the hi-perf 348. The '59 would have to be a non-power steering car, but the '60 could be either, since the P/S pump was divorced from the generator in '60.
If you find one from a BOP with a different number, it may be 35amp and have solid mount ball bearing end frames, but the frames might not be as tall as the 1102173. They were also used in the series 2 & 3 light trucks, and not many people look at trucks in junk yards, so you might get lucky. And don't forget to ask the yard owner if he has a shelf of old generators. Many yards remove those for inside stock before the vehicle goes in the field. Lots of gold on those shelves.
