    exhaust pipe rattling

    Hi All

After getting my 62 vette on the road from a frame off resto. I'm noticing a rattle under the car. It turns out that where the exhaust pipes go through the holes in the cross member of the frame, the pipes hit in the 2 rear holes when I hit bumps in the road. Is this normal or should they not hit? I got under the car and it does not look like I can do anything about it. Any suggestions? Should I put some kind of wrap on the pipe so it does not hit the metal and make the noise or would a muffler shop be able to do something by heating and bend the pipe some?

    Thanks for any help...........John

Should NOT hit. Correct pipes should adjust for needed clearance. A good shop might be able to help you.

With the right brackets you should be able to fix this yourself. It takes a little time to loosen things up and then adjust but it is not that difficult just time consuming. Just my 2 cents

        John:
I recently replaced the exhaust system on my '61 using new hangers and clamps.
The hangers near the cross members have slots instead of holes where they bolt to the frame. You should be able to adjust the location of the pipes a little this way.

John, I had the same problem with my 59. I loosened the clamp where it goes thru the frame and I loosened the manifold pipe at the manifold. I then inserted a large screw driver under the pipe where it passes thru the frame a pushed the pipe up as high as I could and tightened the clamp where it passes thru the frame and then tightened the manifold pipe to the manifold. This fixed mine. Good Luck, Jimmy

Thanks guys for your responses. I brought my car to a muffler shop and they adjusted it for me for free. It's tuff to work on the ground. But all is set, thanks. And for my gas gauge and temp gauge problems I had, I fixed them too. New temp sending unit and alittle bending on the float rod fixed the problem. Thanks to all for those helpful ideas.
