    Fan Clutches

Could someone tell me a process to tell if a fan clutch is working properly? On my 62 the fan will free wheel with no resistance when I shut down on a hot engine. I didn't think this was normal. I've also recently had trouble in traffic with a faster increase in temp than I normally would. Thanks

I had a similar problem with my '62, Sent it out to Fred Oliva, returned good as new, drove it on road tour to St Louis a couple of years ago with it no problem. email foliva@gate.net

Same results as Bill on my 62. Before I had Fred rebuild a correct clutch for me, his criteria was no more than three revolutions past engine stop. My old one more or less free wheeled after shutdown.......Dick

I was taught by someone smarter than me that if you want to check a fan clutch (like at a flea market) just hold the hub and start spinning the clutch. If it spins free, it is bad. I have done this with many at flea markets. At first, there is resistance even in bad ones. You must spin it enough to get it a little warm. Gary

also clutch fan units must be stored verticaly, never laid down because it causes the fluid to do something it should not do. does anyone know why?

Best way to store a fan clutch is the way it sits on the engine . Ask Fred
