Thanks guys, that's all very good advice. I'll try the initial set up tonight with the original spacer/shim combo and new bearings and see where I'm at then go from there. I expect them to be on the "loose" side so I might try to reduce the thickness myself as long as I can keep parallelism to a bare minimum. If not then I'll at least know what dimension I need and maybe I'll see the guy at Carlisle that sells them in .001" increments and if that fails, I'll just order them from the number Joe posted. Either way I'm pretty confident that I'll now be able to get the clearance down to .001-.002"!

In addition you'll want to check the spacer surfaces too. I rebuild and parallel grind both the spacer and shim to size. I set them to .0015-.002max. Use some light spindle oil on the bearings when setting them up and only grease once you are sure about the setting. Be sure to use a setup tool or an old polished spindle. Do not try and reuse the old bearings. Check the rotor runout in addition to the endplay. If you get both under .002" you'll be ok.
I found the used spacers to be out as much as .005" if you don;t parallel grind them you may find the endplay you set on the tool is not what you end up with once you press them on.
