[Memories] Did Anyone Attend The 1988 Nationals?

    Folks,

I'm looking for folks who attended the 1988 National Convention in Hershey, PA. Basically, anything - how the judging went, drag racing experiences at Maple Grove, funny stories, how things were different from now, etc.

I will, of course, credit appropriately - I'm the editor of chapter newsletter for the chapter that put that National on (the Delaware Valley NCRS).

    John,

My records show the 1988 National convention was at Lancaster, PA. Based on my experiences there I believe if one mentions Lancaster one is likely to get very different responses than if one mentions Hershey, PA.

      Terry,

You're right, course - it was in Lancaster.

I'm such a newbie at this...

A few memories. Was hot (even hotter to me than most..was going for a Duntov), long way from motel to trailer parking, found it easy to "borrow", as needed, a golf cart from motel (one key fits all), nice banquet, I believe that it was the first indoor judging at a convention.

Just a few quick memories. After a while they all seem to run together, Boston, Reno, Osage Beach, Bend, Williamsburg, etc. Good times, good cars, and good friends.

i was there. hot. got Duntov with the 67 400 C-60 coupe. later in the week we ran the old vette at Maple grove. saw a well known Long Island restorer t-bone the wall in a midyear coupe and watched Zora run one of the original Grand Sports take a 1/4 mile pass. still have the t-shirt given to drag strip participants. still have the registration books and name tags. if you'd like to come out to Cumberland some time, stop by and you can look over the memorabilia. mike

Thanks, Mike! Well known Long Island restorer would narrow it down quickly, wouldn't it...

...very cool information for a newbie newsletter writer (I've only been an NCRS member since 2003).

I remember a class of eleven LT1s being judged on one day, and the rest of the 1970-1972s being judged the next day. Someplace I have a photo of all eleven LT1s lined up. The air conditioning failed in the convention hall for the second day of judging. That made those going for the Duntov Award even hotter.
It was HOT -- as usual in those times the hotel was under construction -- the work crews woke us up every morning. That was OK for those of us judging, but you can imagine how the rest of the family took that. Zoe got an ear infection from the swimming pool.
Was that the meet with David E Davis as speaker, or was that the warm-up Regional? He gave an outstanding presentation about Corvette advertising, regardless of which meet it was.

only meet i remember David E Davis speaking was at one of the MAC/NCRS Chapter meets in the mid 80's. Don Larue orchestrated his appearance.i also remeber, at the Lancaster meet, where two well know NCRS members, under the influence of elixer of the devil, decided to jump in the host hotel pool sans garments.both are now deceased. also remember daughter chrissy and wife lea running out of gas in the old 54 vette about an hopur from cumberland on the return. outside temp was greater than 105. both were unhappy with he who was in charge of gasoline procurement.mike

That was also where a group of us from south of the Mason-Dixon line presented NCRS President Dan Gale a bag of items from Dixe (i.e. grits, a Moon Pie, livermush, and a book on how to speak Southern). Somehow the diction lesson never did work with Dan.

I have some pictures of Zora driving the #12 GS down the track. Think everyone was scared he would get on it hard, but he remained cool. Will scan and post it. It was Kevin McKay that smached the wall with his car. Too much HP and not enough tires back then. Great convention driving out throught the covered bridges to drags as I remember it.

The 88 Lancaster convention was the first NCRS affair I attended. Pat Kraus towed my 54 to the National to be judged. That was the first time it had ever been judged, BTW. Can't do that anymore. Have to have a Chapter or Regional before you can enter a National. Took a Top Flight the first time out. Had a full class of 10 cars as I recall.

Kraus and I barely made it to Lancaster, towing from Maryland up the back roads. Kraus's old Suburban had a slipping trans, and we barely made it over the hills in Quarryville.

It was HOT. Met Larry Shinoda and Zora there. Larry was selling his autographed lithographs. Still have them hung in my office.

Met Carlton Colcloch for the first time. He had me "OJ" (although it wasn't called OJ back then) in the 63-4 division.

NICE time. It was at the Host Farm Resort on Rt. 30. Every time I drive by the place, I remember the Nationals. Chuck

-------I wasnt at the 88 convention, but am struck by thoughts of my pal Dan Gale and just how much of a special person he was. For those of you that didnt ever cross paths with Dan he was a one-of-a-kind. I truly dont think the museum would be there today if it wasnt for Dan, and thats just one small facet on a really long list. I cant say this about many, but I really miss him..........Bill S
