A '68 would have also had AIR for all 50 states, and this would have been combined with ported vacuum advance. Switching to full time vacuum advance will decrease idle temperature and increase fuel economy, but if you switch to full time install a NAPA/Echlin VC1765 VAC that provides full vacuum advance at 12" manifold vacuum.

Re: 1968 L36 Overheats at Idle

Thanks again to all who responded. I switched to manifold vacuum and the oil pressure rose, with the operating temp falling. It takes longer to "puke" coolant at idle but it still happens.

I took some photos of the fan clutch, but couldn't get any numbers. It looks brand new but I have no way of knowing. I forwarded the pictures of the engine lift brackets to Terry via private e-mail but if anyone wants them, let me know.

I will be happy to try the NAPA/Echlin VC1765 VAC but(showing my ignorance) don't know what it does. There is (I think) 10" manifold vacuum now, at idle.

    Thanks again. Chuck Faillace

If you only have 10" vacuum at idle you need a VC1810, which provides full vacuum advance at 8". Your engine must have and aftermarket cam as the OE cam should pull at least 14" at 600.
