My NCRS judging manual says the front brake shields have the part number followed by the letter "L" or "R". I have some shields with the letter and without. The ones without look pretty old and original...dirty and pitted. Is it possible my bible is wrong? Anyone know for sure as I would like to have some plated and my best ones have no letter. Thanks, Gary

Re: Brake Caliper Backing Plate Numbers
Gary-----
There were actually 3 different sets of part numbers for these shields. These are:
65-67
GM #3864117, left side; GM #3864118, right side
68-only
GM #3898011, left side; GM #3898012, right side
69-82
GM #3953423, left side; GM #3953424, right side.
The original front brake shields on my original owner 1969 are the 3953423-4 shields and the DO HAVE the "-L" and "-R" after the part numbers. Also, I have several NOS 3953423-4 shields and they also all have the left and right indications.
However, as far as the earlier shields go, I don't know if they had the left and right indications or not.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Brake Caliper Backing Plate Numbers
Joe, Thanks. Actually, my original front dust shields have LH and RH after the part number, not just L and R as the judging manual states for 67. Then, I have some old ones that look ugly enough to be original with only the part number (xxxx117 and xxxx118) and no left right stamping of any kind. Anyone else have information to share? Re: Brake Caliper Backing Plate Numbers
Bryan..thanks for your response. My gut feeling was that the stamping was not consistent and the judging manual was incorrect. I know mine are original on this car (34K miles) and they are stamped with RH and LH instead of just L and R per the judging manual. Looks like there were three stamping configurations minimum.
