My Temperature gauge on my 66 vert L79 327/350hp was not working so replaced the gauge twice, Sender once, then started looking at my wiring harness.
Found a poorly repaired area of the Water Temp Sender wire just as it goes into the wiring harness from the engine. Bubba used one of those crimp ons to connect a new wire to the remaining original and over crimped it. Repaired it with a proper solder job and shrink tube, tried the gauge again and still no luck.
Continued to trace the wiring. Pulled the bulk head connectors on the fire wall and noticed some green build up and three of the pins pushed in. Two on the firewall side and one on the plug on the engine harness. Pulled them back out to their original position, cleaned everthing up with Electrical contact cleaner, brass brush, then a light film of Dialectric grease. Re attached everything then continued looking at the engine side wiring harness.
Damn! if the Thick red alternator wire had not melted it's plastic sheathing and the black electrical tape for approximately 8 inches from just behind the bulk head connector where the wires intersect back 8" towards the alternator. You could clearly see bare wires for almost the whole 8". Doesn't look fresh, looks like it's been like that for a long time. (Can you say fire hazard!!!)
Looks like an engine harness replacment job. Really wasn't planning anymore projects till fall. But this just can't be left alone.
Who carries the best harness at the best price and do any of the vendors offer any discounts for being NCRS members?
Any suggestions for this task? Anything else I will need or to look for?
Thanks,
Nick
Always something with these old cars.
There goes another weekend.
